Army Jobs TV advert

Excellent. Was having a surf after posting my last blog entry and came across this. The first of the original four Army Jobs TV ads that I worked upon back at Publicis Dialog.

Doesn't seem like two years ago!

The Evolution of Search

When and where did search marketing come from? How did it become the multi-million pound enterprise that it exists as today?

During a quick search of digg.com, I came across this interesting article on it's history.

Well worth a read

Addicted to Film?

How many of the top 250 films (according to Total Film) have you seen?

Are you a movie addict? I thought I was but after selecting, and very honestly, all of the films on the list I had watched, scored a pretty lame 41%.

Can you do any better?

Take 10 mins to complete here...

Would like to hear how you got on!

Live for Films: Star Wars: Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones, 2002 - DVD Review

Star Wars Episode 2 is on TV this afternoon in the UK. Love it or hate it (though probably less than The Phantom Menace) this is the first time we really see what Anakin Skywalker is capable of and the foundations for his eventual fall to the dark side.

Here's a review of the film to wet your whislte...

The Day the Earth Stood Still - film review

Went to see the new The Day the Earth Stood Still last night and thought I'd share my thoughts with you. I'm going to make a determined effort not to give away any spoilers or the ending, so here goes:

Things started off really well, in true sci-fi fashion, lots of serious scientists, being very busy and important followed by a series of unexplained events.

Now, as the film goes on, I tried to get interested in the characters but Jennifer Connolley is so bleeding dull I just didn't care about her at all. This all cumulated with me at the end of the film thinking, is this nearly finished and oh, I don't really care what happened to the Earth.

In short, I wouldn't rush to see this if I were you

Marketing for beginners - the reading list

If you could recommend a range of books to a budding marketer, what would you recommend?

When I left University (after reading Geology, not Marketing) social networking was offline only. I remember doing it the hardway, meeting people face-to-face and swapping business cards.
Nowadays however, you can become friends with someone on the other side of the world (or even in the same town) and not meet them face-to-face!

If someone you know were to leave University this academic year, are there any books you would recommend they read prior to getting stuck in on their first day.
For me, there are three, which I have listed here:

Meatball Sundae by Seth Godin

Purple Cow by Seth Godin (you can probably tell I like reading his books)

The Art of Client Service by Robert Soloman

Enjoy -pass this on as I'd like to hear your thoughts

Are you Seth Godin's apprentice?

Courtesy of the Copyblogger site, Seth Godin is running a program to select an apprentice!

If I wasn't married and was ten years younger, I'd be applying!

Here's the details

Share Google Calendar with iCal

How are your cross-platform skills?

If, like me, you use a PC for the day job but have seen the light and purchased a Mac for your own work, you will be interested to know that the programmers at Google have released an interesting app.

Called Calaboration, this allows you to access your google calendar through your Mac's iCal app.

This means that while you are out and about, without access to your trusty Mac, you can update your Google Calendar and then sync it with you Mac when you get home. Obviously you can then sync it with your iPhone / iPod as you normally would.

Obviously, I would much rather have a Mac at work so don't get me started!

You can read the article and download the app here

Battlestar Galactica Advertising

What happens when you mix Advertising and Battlestar Galactica? Well, as you can see from the below advertisements, it's goes constructivist. Or reminiscent of Soviet propagander of the 1930s.

Live for Films: Who is the Fifth Cylon? I think it is...

Live for Films: Who is the Fifth Cylon? I think it is...

I'm going for Doc Cotton!

Authenticity, and getting it wrong!

I learnt an important lesson in the etiquette, if not the rules of blogging this week. With the majority of us have day jobs outside of blogging (unless you're one of the lucky few who make this a full time profession), you may have often come up against the following issue:

What to do when your day job crosses over with your blogger life and you want to seed responses?

In my case, while working for Geronimo on a web build project for the migraine product Imigran Recovery, thought it would be a good idea to post a link to the site through my Twitter account. Within minutes of my post, EaonP (also on Twitter and who I work with at Geronimo) emailed me saying that I needed to be open and honest with my postings.

Therefore, I have learnt a valuable lesson in authenticity and in effect, learnt how not to do something. As a blogging newbie, it seems to me to be quite a rare thing to read a post where someone is telling you how NOT to do something.

Not being authentic could therefore be seen as being the darkside of blogging, where you could start generating chatter and interest in a marketing campaign, which increases awareness of your pesonal blog and the business objectives of the brand you are working for. However just because you can, does this mean you should?

Learning from my mistakes, I would say no, you shouldn't.

What about you - have you ever come up against this issue? I can't believe it's just happened to me...

Star Trek USS Kelvin Bridge Crew

Details have been released on the bridge crew for the USS Kelvin that gets shot to bits in the new Star Trek film, out next year. Two people stand out for me.

1. Captain Richard Robau - wasn't he one of the bad guys in Ironman?
2. George Kirk, that's KIRK! I wonder if he is a relation who meets a grizzly end?

Don't just take my word for it, other people out there are also talking about it, as well as the design of the ship. see it here at the Weatherstation blog.

What do you think?
